Columbia County
Portage, WI
Totaling about 99,400 square feet, this project included the construction of two new buildings, as well as the remodel of the existing Columbia County courthouse. Connecting the new buildings, is a pedestrian walkway which incorporates cast stone piers and expressed structure similar to the many historic bridges and train truss bridges found throughout Columbia County, located in Portage, Wis.
The building site straddles the Portage Canal between the Wisconsin and Fox rivers where the lumberyard and historic Portage Hosiery Company once stood. The exterior design, although contemporary, incorporates elements of the canal’s past with the introduction of shed roofs, a simple rhythm of punched windows, and similar material palette.
