American Family Children’s Hospital
Located just west of the existing UW Hospital and Clinics, the newly enhanced American Family Children’s Hospital features a cheerful, family-friendly atmosphere with increased accommodations including larger inpatient rooms, a pediatric intensive care unit, childhood cancer unit, and much more.
Findorff crews began construction of this 420,000-square-foot facility in late 2004 and completed the space during the summer of 2007. In continuing the strong relationship with UW Health, Findorff teamed with HDR again for a 45,000-square-foot vertical expansion in June 2012. This project involved the addition of two levels to the facility’s existing bed tower, as well as the addition of a penthouse. The seventh floor will be formally planned in the future with universal patient rooms to accommodate medical/surgical nursing units. The eighth level will have twenty-four patient rooms and provide a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the north end of the building, as well as a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the south end.
The project also includes the build-out of existing shelled space on the first level within the American Family Children’s Hospital, plus the enclosure of the existing terrace located adjacent to the shelled space. Additional work will include the renovation of an existing waiting room and a portion of the day treatment suite. This renovated space will be the Diagnostic Pavilion and support MRI, RF, CT, Ultrasound, and a Hybrid OR along with their associated support spaces and a select few offices. Construction was completed in April 2014.
The American Family Children’s Hospital rounds out an integrated health sciences complex that further builds upon the extraordinary research strength of UW-Madison including the promise of stem cell research, gene therapy, image-guided therapies and state-of-the-art care.
